Whilst often being the restoration of choice, implants are not suitable for everyone and the patient must have a sufficient amount of jawbone to be able to accomodate the implant.
Sometimes deficiencies in the jawbone can be made good by bone augmentation. Implants may not be an option for patients who are heavy smokers or people with chronic conditions such as poorly-controlled diabetes.
Dental implants in the UK and Ireland are expensive and patients regularly choose to travel to Budapest to take advantage of the savings that can be made. Implants in the UK can be as much as £2500, whilst at Kreativ Dental the cost of cosmetic dental implants is from £580 each.
Implants are placed directly into the jawbone and act as artificial roots upon which crowns and bridges and occasionally sophisticated dentures may be placed.
Our implants are constructed from titanium, which during a period of five or six months following placement become integrated with the jawbone. During these five or six months the implant is entirely within the gum and the bone with nothing showing in the mouth. If patients have an exisiting denture, they can normally continue to wear them during this period although some adjustment is sometimes needed.
Implant procedure
The procedure is routinely carried out under local anaesthesia. By prior arrangement, sedation may be available.
Once the implant is in place, the gum is stitched over the top of it and the area is left to heal. Stitches are normally removed after about a week or two. This healing process allows the jawbone to integrate with the surface of the implant making it strong enough to support the final restoration. This occurs within five or six months. Most patients have their implants placed in a visit of about 3 days to Budapest and return home to have the sutures removed.
At the second stage a smaller surgical procedure is needed to expose the implants through the gum. About 48 hours later when the gum around the implant has healed, the dentist can take an impression that allows the crownwork, bridgework or denture to be made.
Our experience has taught us that with a suitable patient we can complete the initial implant insertion in 3 days. This relies on the condition that the patient can call on someone in their home country to remove a few sutures a week or so after the dental surgery. In practice most people use their regular dentist who is happy to cooperate.
